ALIEN INVASION OF EARTH

But the film is a saddening bore
‘Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It’s about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
It’s the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman beating up the wrong guy
Oh man wonder if he’ll ever know
He’s in the best-selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Nothing that mattered yesterday matters today.

No argument, no war, no inequality, no injustice, none of it.  None of the million-billion daily crises that define the human experience matter at all anymore, for the human experience is forever changed.

We are not alone in the universe.

Recently, the President of the United States confirmed that we have unexpected guests.

There are others out there, other intelligent, thinking beings, and they mean us harm.

They mean us destruction.

Whether this destruction is to take the form of our extermination, or our subjugation, is irrelevant to them.  All they want is for us to surrender our resources, our homes, our very PLANET to them, and allow them dominion over its bounty.  To allow them dominion over our very souls.

This cannot happen, and we cannot allow our own petty squabbles to get in the way of the real struggle – the struggle for our very existence.

If you believe in a higher power, you may feel that this is a test: That we are being called to justify our existence in defense of an external threat.  That we are being measured against a foe that can easily cut us down in a hail of atomic fire one by one, to see if we have the wisdom and courage to stand together.  We must stand together.

Some will fall.  Many will fall.  Many of those who choose to rise against impossible odds, to defy what they believe our true destiny is, will never go home. They will leave behind friends and families.  They will leave behind small children who have have it explained to them why they’ll only ever see Mommy or Daddy in pictures from now on.  They will leave behind everything and transition into memory, into history.

But the Monitor believes that even though many will fall, some will remain standing.  Some will pass this gauntlet – not unchanged, but unvanquished.  To those proud few, we can do nothing but offer our sincere thanks, and our assurance that your struggles will not go uncounted.  To those, and to those who give their very lives in the service of humanity, the Monitor finds itself in the odd position of not having the proper words to convey our gratitude for your sacrifice.  Any possible thanks we could offer could only cheapen the unutterable and overwhelming mourning we feel that your deaths were necessary.  The Monitor will spend its last cent to make sure your families and loved ones never want for anything, for as many generations as it is able to do so.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is time for us all to stand and be counted.  It is time for every person to decide once and for all whether we will fight to exist.  If you will fight, contact your local government to see how your talents, resources, and gifts can be best applied, and please understand that not every fighter carries a rifle.  Some fighters support their world better with a plowshare than a sword, as even the most efficient armies require food.  Some fighters support their world not with a blade, but with a surgeon’s scalpel, to heal the wounds that are sure to come.  Some fighters support their world with a schoolbook, teaching our children how best to keep themselves safe in a changed world with new rules.  Some fighters support their world with not any weapon at all but their minds – planning how best to use our limited resources against an enemy we can not know, in the hopes that we can gain understanding of their weaknesses, and how best to exploit them. Some fighters even support their world by forsaking the sword in favor of the crosier – even the fiercest warrior needs their spiritual wounds salved as much as their physical ones.

If you will not fight, then find another way to help.  It is past time for rivalries or differences of faith to get in the way of the struggle.  Our visitors have made it clear that there is no place left on this planet anymore for those who would stand by, who would lay down and die.

Some may find themselves paralyzed with fear – how can we fight against a being that can call down lightning from the skies?  They are as gods to us, like Thor himself judging humaity.

In Norse mythology, Thor is indeed the god of thunder, able to crush his foes with gouts of lightning and fierce strikes from Mjolnir.  However, Thor did not spring into being from nothing – he had parents.  His father, Odin, and his mother, Jörð, a giantess.

Jörð, in Icelandic, is the word for Earth.  If we fight – and we will fight – not even Thor himself can stand against the might of his mother.

If we fight – and we will fight – we will win, but only if we stand together. God – whatever you understand God to be – stands with us.
